  Andalusian Mare

Edita H

This week's Horse of the Week is a lovely grey Andalusian mare named Edita H. She was brought here from Texas when she was 7 months old by her current owner. Edita is now a feisty 5 year old and is the dominant alpha mare amongst the other horses in her field. Edita doesn't like to be second to any horse.

Her owner is currently working with Edita in the discipline of dressage. This lovely mare makes her home at Whispering Winds Stable in Hillsdale, Ontario.

The Andalusian is one of the oldest pure breeds of horse in the world, originating on the Iberian Peninsula in Spain. The Andalusian is strongly built, yet extremely elegant. In Canada there were approximately 400 of these horses registered in 2005. In the U.S., they number around 5,400. Today, the Andalusian is ridden both English and Western. This versatile breed can be found throughout North America, competing in dressage, driving (both pleasure and competitive), trail, western pleasure and English pleasure, cutting, cattle work and jumping. The Andalusian, with its love of people and proud but kind temperament, creates the ideal family horse. They are sensitive, intelligent, responsive and cooperative, learning quickly and easily when treated with respect. Approximately 80% of Andalusians are grey, 15% bay and 5% black. The typical Andalusian stands 15.2 to 16.2 hh.

We'd like to congratulate Edita on being our April 24th, 2006 Horse of the Week
