CLICKER TRAINING HORSES
Horses are highly intelligent animals that can be easily trained with clicker training. This method is based on the scientific principles of operant conditioning, first developed for training marine mammals and now used in zoos worldwide to communicate with their animals and keep the handlers safe. Positive reinforcement, in the form of food rewards, is given to the horse for every small step they take towards achieving the desired goal. The horse is never punished and unwanted behaviour is ignored.
Clicker training can be used for all aspects of training horses, and there are many things you can teach your equine friend that would be very difficult with traditional methods. Liberty work, agility and handling for veterinary procedures are superbly done with clicker training.
Clicker training is not just about clicking and treating. It is also about having a philosophy and commitment to a way of working with animals where the needs of the animal are recognized and the relationship is valued as much as any training or performance goals. Clicker training is about creating happy, confident and creative animals while teaching them new skills. - Katie Bartlett
